Vulnerability Assessment for Authorized Business Systems

Software, configurations, and infrastructure change constantly, and each change can introduce weaknesses. A vulnerability assessment identifies known issues in authorized systems, evaluates their relevance, and provides prioritized guidance for remediation.

Business challenges

What organizations commonly face

  • Patching backlogs that make it hard to know what to fix first.
  • Internet-facing services that were deployed without a security review.
  • Legacy systems that cannot be easily updated.
  • Scanner output that is too noisy to act on.

Security considerations

Automated scanning is useful, but raw results require interpretation. Severity scores do not account for how a system is used, whether it is reachable, or whether compensating controls exist. We combine tooling with manual validation to reduce false positives and focus attention on findings that matter. All testing is performed only on systems for which written authorization has been provided.

Methodology

How the engagement works

A general outline. Specific activities are agreed in writing during scoping.

  1. Authorization and rules of engagementWritten confirmation of scope, timing, and contacts.
  2. DiscoveryIdentification of in-scope hosts, services, and applications.
  3. Scanning and analysisAutomated and manual review for known weaknesses and misconfigurations.
  4. ValidationReview of findings to reduce false positives and confirm relevance.
  5. ReportingFindings ranked by risk with practical remediation steps.
FAQ

Vulnerability Assessment questions

Is a vulnerability assessment the same as a penetration test?

No. A vulnerability assessment identifies and evaluates potential weaknesses. A penetration test attempts to actively exploit them to demonstrate impact. The two are complementary.

Will testing disrupt our systems?

Testing is planned to minimize operational impact, including agreed time windows and exclusions for sensitive systems.

Can you test systems hosted by a third party?

Only when the system owner and, where required, the hosting provider have authorized testing in writing.
